Medieval poets and singers often turned to Biblical stories which inspired new creations – often visionary – making use of virtuoso poetical structures sometimes based on the sequentia form. This unique recording of large-scale works based on Bible stories (Noah and the Flood, Samson & Delila, David’s Lament for Saul and Jonathan, Job’s misfortunes) also includes such Biblical classics as the Book of Generations from Matthew and the 13th century French ‘Lai of the Old and New Testaments’ by Ernoul de Gastinois. The Lai of Samson is recorded by Sequentia here for the second time (see also ‘Spielmann und Kleriker’). Bagby, Thornton & Gaver are joined by the men’s vocal ensemble of Sequentia, the ‘Sons of Thunder’.
